On November 10, 2024, St Andrew’s Cathedral was filled with reverence and joy as family, friends, and members of the Anglican community gathered for a momentous occasion: the ordination of seven new deacons, each committing their lives to serve the Church. The newly renovated Cathedral nave was a fitting setting for this solemn yet celebratory event, as the beautifully restored architecture underscored the timeless and sacred nature of the ordination ceremony.
Archbishop Titus Chung presided over the service, affirming each candidate’s call to ministry and recognising their gifts to support the Church’s mission across regions. Representing different deaneries, the newly ordained deacons are now prepared to embark on their roles in diverse communities. This year’s candidates for ordination reflect the Church’s commitment to minister to people from all walks of life, across multiple languages and cultural backgrounds.
Those ordained include Cai Yu (Holy Trinity Church, Mandarin), Christopher Ng (My Saviour’s Church, English), Fu Weikai (All Saints’ Church, Mandarin), and Kueh Chun Chiang (Church of the Good Shepherd, Mandarin) from the Archdeaconry of Singapore.
Meanwhile, from the Deanery of Indonesia, Binsar Situmorang (Good News Anglican Church, Hamparan Perak) and Oscard Tobing (Church of Christ the Rock, Kupang) were also ordained. Representing the Deanery of Cambodia, Tum Vibol (Church of Christ Our Redeemer) completed this diverse group of servants.
The service was marked by scripture readings, hymns, and the laying on of hands, an ancient tradition symbolising the imparting of the Holy Spirit and affirming each deacon’s call to serve.
This significant event marked the ordination of new Deacons, affirming their call to serve within the Church.
The new Deacons will support their parishes and communities in areas like pastoral care, outreach, and discipleship, reflecting Christ’s love and servant leadership. From Singapore’s bustling urban congregations to the remote towns of Indonesia and Cambodia, these Deacons are a testament to the Church’s commitment to make disciples in all nations.
In all, the Ordination Service was a sacred reminder of the calling to serve and the faith that unites the Anglican community. As the new deacons embark on this journey, they carry with them the prayers and support of the Church, equipped to spread the message of hope and love in their ministries.
