About Course
OVERVIEW
The Master of Theology (MTh) degree at Trinity Theological College (TTC) is designed for those with a strong first theological degree who are seeking advanced knowledge for either pastoral or teaching ministries. The MTh provides training in developing advanced skills in study and research and it is a good stepping-stone to more advanced research degrees such as the MLitt or the DTh.
TTC recognises that the rapid development of Asia calls for an informed and well-honed leadership from the Christian church. It also recognises the urgent need for more theological educators and theological education in the region to be strengthened. It is with all these in mind that the degree is offered. Rigour of thought with commitment to the historic Christian faith will be the defining ethos of the degree.
The MTh programme is offered in the following areas of concentration: Old Testament Studies, New Testament Studies, Church History Studies, and Theological Studies.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Those involved in the teaching of Anglicanism are especially encouraged to take up this MTh. While the course is co-designed by SPH and TTC with Clergy of the Diocese of Singapore in mind, non-clergy and indeed non-Anglicans may also apply directly to TTC to do this particular MTh.
Pre-requisite qualification will be a good first degree in theology (generally a Grade Point Average of 3.3 or B+). This is usually an MDiv degree from an accredited theological school. Special consideration may be given to a candidate with a good BD or BTh degree.
COURSES OFFERED
The four MTh Courses will likely constitute:
- One compulsory general core course for all MTh students.
- One compulsory discipline specific foundational core (i.e. pertaining to Theological studies)
- Two discipline specific electives (i.e. pertaining to Anglicanism). These can be fixed taught courses or a guided study course, in-person or online.
COURSE AND THESIS REQUIREMENTS
The following are the minimum requirements for each of the four MTh courses (which must be attended in person at TTC):
- One 3-hour written examination (in lieu of this, a paper could be written with the consent of the course instructor).
- One semestral paper of 5,000 words
- The minimum final grade required for each course is B-.
The final MTh thesis must be written within the limit of 25,000 words (not including bibliography).
The MTh degree requires the completion of four courses/modules and a thesis. The student must maintain at least a B- for all courses and pass the thesis examination in order to be eligible for graduation.
PROGRAMME DURATION
The MTh on Anglicanism is designed to be completed part-time over 3 years. This allows Clergy of the Diocese to remain in full-time employment while undertaking this course. However, non-clergy candidates who wish to complete it full-time in 1.5 years may be able to do so, with some modification to the configuration and sequencing of modules (see below).
Most students taking the MTh on a part-time basis will cover one course per semester. This will span the first two years. The final year of their MTh will be spent writing their thesis. For example:
Year 1:
- 1st Semester (Jul to Nov): MTh General Core
- 2nd Semester (Jan to May): Elective (Anglican focus)
Year 2:
- 1st Semester (Jul to Nov): Discipline Specific Foundational Core
- 2nd Semester (Jan to May): Elective (Anglican focus)
Year 3:
- 1st and 2nd Semester (Jul to May): Thesis writing
Students taking the MTh on a full-time basis will cover two courses per semester. This will take up the first year of their MTh. The final semester will be spent writing their thesis. For example:
Year 1:
- 1st Semester (Jul to Nov): MTh General Core + Discipline Specific Foundational Core
- 2nd Semester (Jan to May): Elective (Anglican focus) x 2
Year 2:
- 1st Semester (Jul to Nov): Thesis writing
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS
Overall course fee for part-time students (non-residential) payable to TTC over 3 years is approximately $15,000.
Clergy from the Diocese of Singapore may apply to receive a Scholarship from the Diocesan Post Graduate Theological Studies (PGTS) Fund.
If the PGTS application is approved by the Archbishop, up to 80% of the full fees (approximately $12,000) will be covered by the Scholarship. Of the remaining $3000, it is recommended that contribution by student and sending parish will be on a one- third/two-third shared basis.
Worked example 1:
Total cost of MTh = S$15,000
Scholarship granted = S$9,000 (below maximum)
Parish contribution (2/3) = $4,000
Student contribution (1/3) = $2,000
Worked example 2:
Total cost of MTh = S$15,000
Scholarship granted = S$12,000 (maximum)
Parish contribution (2/3) = $2,000
Student contribution (1/3) = $1000
If no PGTS Scholarship is granted, the full cost of the MTh will have to be borne by the student and parish in a proportion to be negotiated between them.
PARISH REQUIREMENTS (For Clergy from Diocese of Singapore)
In addition to obtaining the financial support of the parish (see above), all Clergy wishing to do the MTh will be required to obtain the clearance and endorsement of their Vicar and PCC to be granted 1-1.5 days of study time per week for the duration of the course.
