About Course

Purpose and Approach 

Through a mixture of recorded lectures over online and on-site lessons with demonstration and practice, this Lay Readers Course aims to: 

  1. Impart basic knowledge about the history, theology, structure, and church order of the Anglican Church, and more detailed knowledge of Anglican liturgy; (WHAT)
  2. Develop skills relating to the liturgical role of Lay Readers; (HOW)
  3. Inspire positive attitudes and convictions about worshipping and serving in the Anglican church. (WHY)

Course Requirements: 

  1. Attend all lessons online and on-site, unless excused by the Course Coordinator.
  2. For online sessions, to be counted as present, cameras must be on, and participants must stay fully engaged, i.e. not driving or multi-tasking in other ways. 
  3. Undertake a practical assessment on the hands-on skills required of a Lay Reader.
  4. Submit all written and video assignments by the due date.

 

Flip-Class Approach to Course Instruction:

For each week’s lesson, in the days prior to the scheduled lesson, the course content will be viewed by students on videos at their own time (own-time-own-target!). 

Then on the day of the lesson, students will take a simple quiz on the contents of the video they have watched.  The remaining lesson time will be used for clarification of the content and discussion of its implications.  In other words, we will maximise our time together for interaction around the topic instead of content download.  This flip-class approach aligns with best practices in adult learning.
