Course Requirements:
This course is designed to equip those who intend to apply for a Lay Readers Licence, which authorises them to serve as Lay Readers in their designated parish. As such, this is not a course for which members can freely sign themselves up out of interest. Admission to this course is by Vicar/Priest-in-charge/Dean’s nomination only.
All students of the course will be required to meet the following requirements:
- Attend all lessons online and on-site, unless excused by the Course Coordinator.
- For Zoom sessions, to be counted as present, cameras must be on, and participants must stay fully engaged, i.e. not driving or multi-tasking in other ways.
- Undertake a practical assessment on the hands-on skills required of a Lay Reader.
- Submit all written and video assignments by the due date.
Flip-Class Approach to Course Instruction:
For each week’s lesson, in the days prior to the scheduled lesson, the course content will be viewed by students on videos at their own time (own-time-own-target!).
Then on the day of the lesson, students will take a simple quiz on the contents of the video they have watched. The remaining lesson time will be used for clarification of the content and discussion of its implications. In other words, we will maximise our time together for interaction around the topic instead of content download. This flip-class approach aligns with best practices in adult learning.
